This Blog Has Moved!

I moved my blog on New Years Day, 2010. If you haven't come to see my new blog, head on over HERE now. This blog will be available for archive reading but I won't be posting here anymore. I hope you'll join me at my new bloggy home!

p.s. I am slowly but surely moving all the blogs I follow over to the new blog, so if I haven't come to visit you for a while, my advice is to leave a comment on my new blog, so I don't miss you in the shuffle!

About Me

My photo
I am a bereaved mother and wife. I began this blog to help me look for the "good things" in life after my daughter, "Babybear", died in July 2005. Three years later, her daddy, my husband, "Bear", died in November 2008. (You'll find a link to their stories on my blog) And now, as difficult as it is, I continue to look for the good things in my life as I learn my new normal with my pup, "Furrybear", at my side. And the angels on my shoulder...

Works For Me: Backwards Edition

It's been a while since I've done a Works For Me post. Today is Backwards Edition, which means I can ask you for advice, as opposed to giving you advice.

This is my favorite shirt. You can see me wearing it here.

but I can't wear it anymore. Can you see why?

Grease stains!

A better look:

So, my friends, I ask you, how can I get rid of these grease stains?!

I would like to wear it again. It's comfortable. I look decent in it. My husband liked it on me. (I miss him)

Try scrubbing with original Dawn dishwashing liquid. (the blue kind, NO bleach)

hmmm I wish I could help! wear it around the house. you wont have to worry about having people seeing the stain and you can still get that special feeling you do when you wear it.

I'm not sure what to tell you, Ter. I do agree with the commentor above...how about you just wear it around your house if you can't get the stain out? It'll still give you that same feeling of comfort.

I don't wear it around the house because I have plenty of around-the-house shirts, and not enough nice outside-the-house shirts. You can't tell by the picture but this shirt is silky and really nice with dress pants for work and such. And because it's silky it's nice and cool, I don't get too hot in it.

POssibly Goop? I've heard that works. Or brake cleaner. Weird I know, but it works for me! It's like a spray can.

I have an oil based product called Goo Gone - it is for removing sticker adhesive. Oil reactivates grease stains. Pour a bit of it on the stain, let it sit for 5 mins, then treat with Spray and wash, Shout etc...and then wash as usual. I get 80% of my set-in grease stains out this way. Even if you can't find Goo Gone, I would try a bit of cooking oil.

Yikes, I didn't know it was a sliky material. Try the shouts and spray-washes. If that doesn't work, see if your local dry cleaner can get it out.

you can get goo gone at Canadian tire...

Good idea Kim, I never heard of that before
Vickie, I never thought about taking it to the dry cleaner!

I will try the goo be gone idea and shouts. I have some spray stuff but it's like 10 years old, lol, seriously, I got it in college!

Grease stains are the worst!

Ethan gets grease stains all the time. The way I get them out is rub them front and back with a stain stick and then press oxy-clean powder into the stickiness of the stain stick. I let is sit for 5-7 days and then wash. It usually comes out.

If it doesn't and it's a shirt that can't be tossed (like yours), think about using fabric paint and painting a little design over it so you can't see the stains.

You could try Oxy-clean spray, and let it soak overnight. Another idea is to try shampoo for oily hair! My mom did this with some makeup stains and they came right out.
For the future, try to spray-treat any stains when you take your clothes off. It might even be a good idea to keep the treater in your bedroom so it's right there for you.

rub liquid dawn (the original blue kind) into it and wash with other clothes.

This is an ongoing problem at my house and I have been wondering if there's a solution too. I often wonder where those grease stains come from but they totally ruin the shirts. Frustrating, especially when that's the ONLY thing that's wrong.

The oxyclean will work.. dawn as well..

I'd go with the easiest option and just get it dry cleaned.. it shouldn't cost too much and if it's a shirt that you love, then it's worth it :)

Baking soda has worked for me in the past but I'm not sure if you have to put it on right after the grease is spilled...good luck! You do look good in that color!

Watkins degreaser. I don't know what I would do without the stuff. You can get a giant bottle of it for $10. (Canadian!) It has saved a few wardrobes of clothing and many other things too! Best of all, it has NO odor!

I'm glad I came by late and got all the suggestions. Grease stains drive me nuts!

This is going to sound counter intuitive, but I've had luck spraying WD-40 on the grease spot and then scrubbing the WD-40 off with liquid dish soap! It seems to work better for me than just the dish soap by itself.

I wish I knew!

A guest poster on my blog wrote about homemade stain removers and supplied this recipe. I don't know if it works on grease but you can try it and let us know!

Homemade Laundry Stain Remover

1/3 cup Dawn Dishsoap

1/3 cup Ammonia

3 Tbsp. Baking Soda

1 cup Water

Mix all ingredients together and store in an empty spray bottle (I use an old “Shout” spray bottle)
