I'm the Sound and The Fury by William Faulkner. I admit, I have never read this book. The description sounds like me though... especially the "trying to come to grips with a major crisis in your life" part and the "mostly overwhelmed with despair at what you've lost" part. I think I'm going to have to read this book now.
